The Amer Fort and Palace is high up on a hill behind Maota Lake, this fortress was for centuries the capital of the Kachhawah Rajputs. When the capital shifted to Jaipur, the site was abandoned.  The fort is in ruins but the palaces, gardens, and temples retain their pristine beauty. The art and the architecture combine Rajput and Mogul influences in felicitous ways. Rather than walk up the incline to the palace we rode an elephant.
