Guide for the Day

Most Indian monuments are guarded by licensed bandits (sorry, tour guides) who get most offended when you decline their services and Humayan's Tomb was no different.  One day we decided that were were old enough to see a tomb by ourselves so we barged our way through the picket line of guides, bought our tickets and went in.  We were wandering around Humayan's Tomb and a couple of caretakers started following us.  One of the caretakers spoke a little English and seemed to enjoy showing off his language skills and telling us something about the place (not that we understood very much).

Humayan's Tomb was erected in the middle of the 16th century by the wife of the Mogul emperor Humayun, this tomb launched a new architectural era that culminated in the Mogul masterpieces in Agra and Fatehpur Sikri. Reminiscent of Persian architecture, this exquisite structure of red sandstone and white marble rests on a raised podium amid gardens intersected by water channels and enclosed by walls.
