We've had a wonderful time in South Africa. It's really a third world country with first world facilities (for those with money). There's terrible poverty, perhaps as bad as India's and 12% of the population still controls almost everything (because they can afford it). Because of this the crime rate is horrific but avoid the major towns (or be very careful) and it's manageable. It's also one of the most beautiful countries on earth.
