This beautiful scenery will change once the Three Gorges dam is completed in 2003. The water will rise 175 meters (574 feet) above where it is now. The gorge will still exist, it just won't be as deep.

Not only is the dam an impressive engineering feat, it is being used for social engineering. One million Chinese people will need to relocate into new towns that are appearing higher up on the riverbank as their current homes will be under water. Their new homes will have improvements over their old homes by having such things as running water and electricity.
